Beyond Words

The devastation in Japan is difficult to wrap my mind around. It is unfathomable. Beyond words. The script from the most extreme disaster movie could not be more shocking. As the director of Iowa Voyagers for the last 23-plus years, I’ve observed the world rocked by many disasters—both natural and manmade—but in my mind, nothing compares with this. Watching the coverage and reading the daily news feeds is mind-boggling. Just as I think it cannot get worse, it does. A feeling of powerlessness comes over me, wanting to help, but being so far away. What little I’ve done seems puny. My donation to the American Red Cross seems like a drop in the bucket. The condolences I’ve added to the thousands already on blogs and websites seem like grains of sand. Not at all adequate.

In talking with others, the feeling of sorrow for Japan seems universal. The Japanese people will need the entire world’s support in their long and arduous recovery.

If you are interested, here are some additional organizations that are accepting donations to aid relief and recovery efforts in Japan.
