Public Service Announcement

This time of year is rough for our family. It’s the time of year when we get hammered by every imaginable germ that winter’s last gasp can throw at us.

Our oldest child is in kindergarten, nature’s perfect petri dish for brewing a cup of nastiness. And for the past several weeks, we’ve waged a war against strep throat—the official Plague of 2011 in Iowa City’s public schools, apparently. We are not winning this war.

Alex started his second round of antibiotics yesterday after an initial ten-day course did not do the trick. But I think I’ve found a lurking culprit as to why he’s not all better:

His Buzz Lightyear toothbrush.

Now I know it’s good advice to throw out toothbrushes after illness. In the craziness of our lives, though, I failed to follow through on this important step. It’s particularly crucial after strep, as the bacteria can live in the moist bristles of a toothbrush and re-infect a child. I can’t say for certain that’s what happened—maybe the first antibiotic treatment didn’t fully kill the strep in the first place—but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what happened.

My advice to you if your family has been under the weather? Throw away your toothbrushes, wipe down every surface with Clorox wipes, and wash sheets and towels in hot water!

Die, germs, die.

To your health,
Kathryn
