Hawkeye Homecoming

Growing up as an Iowa fan in the 90s there are certain things I will always remember about Hawkeye basketball: Tom Davis and his affinity for the bounce pass, the morning my mother came up to my room to tell me that Chris Street had been in a car accident—and the inspiring play of the Hawkeyes those next few weeks, players like Acie Earl, Ricky Davis, and Jess Settles, and the smell—and the taste—of the popcorn inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

As a young boy I thought that Carver-Hawkeye had the best popcorn in the world. Better than the movies and certainly better than anything that came out of the microwave at home. In 1998, my family moved from Davenport to Phoenix and while I had access to NBA basketball, I no longer had access to Carver-Hawkeye popcorn.

Over time my longing for Carver-Hawkeye popcorn dissipated. Embracing my new home, I even put jalapenos on my popcorn on a number of occasions. Earlier this year, I was offered a position at the University of Iowa Alumni Association. I was excited to have the opportunity to move back to my home state—so excited in fact, that I temporarily forgot about the popcorn.

This past Wednesday, I took my girlfriend (who moved all the way to Iowa City with me) to her first Hawkeye basketball game. As we walked into the arena, I told her we had to get a bag of popcorn. As I stood in line I prepared myself for the inevitable. There was no way it could be as good as it was when I was a child.

When it came my turn, I placed my order and got our popcorn. As we walked away from the concession stand and toward our seats I took my first bite of Carver-Hawkeye popcorn in 15 years.

It was the best popcorn I’ve ever had.
