Last year, I proposed a first-person story that would give our Iowa Alumni Magazine readers a detailed, personal account of what it’s like to participate in the Iowa Ladies Football Academy. Little did I know it would be the most fun I’d have in a long time. Maybe the most fun I’ve EVER had reporting a story.

What a day! The unseasonable heat did little to deter the spirits of the women around me. We were all determined to have fun, learn the basics of football alongside Hawkeye players and coaches, and support the ongoing construction of the UI’s new children’s hospital. A win-win situation, to be sure.

You can read the resulting article, “Gridiron Gals,” here.

With plans in full swing for this year’s event, I look back on my experience with warmth and fondness. I wish all the participants in the upcoming 2013 Iowa Ladies’ Football Academy a fabulous time, too.
