A Tribute to Street

The Iowa men’s basketball team will never forget the legend of Chris Street. On January 19, 1993, an unprecedented wave of sorrow swept across Iowa. Chris Street, a gifted Hawkeye basketball player from Indianola, died that evening when his car collided with a snowplow following a team dinner in north Iowa City.

The tragedy left an entire state in shock. The Indianola newspaper dedicated a special four-page section to Street, several UI teammates shaved his jersey number into their hair, and the Iowa House of Representatives observed a moment of silence for the homegrown sports star whose career so many Iowans had followed. In the first game after his death, the Hawkeyes surged to a 96-90 overtime win against Michigan State, wearing black patches on their uniforms with Street’s initials and his now retired No. 40.

On the 20th anniversary of his death, the UI men’s basketball team will again honor a legendary Hawkeye forward whose memory lives on at Iowa. During Saturday’s home game against Wisconsin, players will take the court wearing black patches with “CMS 40” in gold lettering and coaches will wear special pins in remembrance of Street. Also in tribute to their loved one, Street family members will provide the shirts that players will wear during pregame warm-ups, and a halftime ceremony will recognize several previous recipients of the Chris Street Award, presented each year to the athletes who best embody his beloved spirit and enthusiasm.

“Chris represented all that is good about the Midwest and the state of Iowa,” former Hawkeye men’s basketball coach Tom Davis said in 1993. “He was open, caring, honest, loving, and lived live to the fullest every day.”

His legacy continues to inspire.
