A New Home for the Hawks

Iowa golfers anticipate a state-of-the-art practice facility.

The classic saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather in Iowa, wait five minutes.” But when it comes to gaining an edge over spring competition, the Hawkeye men’s and women’s golf teams don’t have time to spare.

In the past, snow and freezing temperatures have put the Hawkeyes at a disadvantage against southern schools that can practice outdoors throughout the winter. The new Varsity Golf Complex—which opens in January on the Finkbine Golf Course—will eliminate that disparity, enabling UI golfers to experience a simulated outdoor round in any type of weather.

The golf complex features a 3,150-square-foot putting green, a short game room for chipping, locker rooms, lounge spaces, offices, and a 1,200-square-foot performance studio with technology to digitally record, analyze, and compare players’ swings to professionals. The studio also includes indoor heated hitting bays that open to the driving range, allowing golfers to work on their full swings in any weather condition.

For the busy student-athlete, the Varsity Golf Complex will also offer more flexibility to practice in between classes and at night. UI men’s golf coach Mark Hankins says, “It will allow us to be on par with our peers in the Big Ten and have a state-of-the-art facility on campus that’s going to be attractive to incoming students and prepare current student-athletes for the NCAA Championships in the spring.”
