Mega Marathon Man!

Steve Cannon’s magic number is 1,037. That’s the distance in miles around Lake Michigan—and Cannon plans to run every single one.

In a few weeks, Cannon—a 1988 communication studies graduate of the UI—will embark on the equivalent of 40 marathons in 40 days. He’ll run, walk, stagger—whatever it takes—around the fifth largest lake in the world to help raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the fight against cancer.

“We all have or know someone with a connection to cancer,” he says. “And I believe that people who have their health need to help those who don’t.”

It won’t be the first time this Des Moines realtor has raised funds for such a worthy cause (in 2009, he undertook a run across Iowa), but it’s certainly the most ambitious. Find out more and follow Cannon’s progress during the event at

Members of the UI Alumni Association can also read about Cannon and his experiences in an upcoming issue of Iowa Alumni Magazine.
