A Tale of Two Parents

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting former UI student Zach Wahls again to hear the story of his life—being raised by two same-sex parents.

Zach gave a special reading from his newly released book, My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength and What Makes a Family. During his time at Prairie Lights, Zach also answered questions from a packed house on topics including his future plans, his recently-acquired fame, and Broadway musicals. After the reading, he signed copies of his book and met with attendees.

His speech on January 31, 2011, where he addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public forum regarding civil unions, amassed over 2 million views on YouTube. Earlier this month, his mother, Terry Wahls (82MD, 86R), gave a presentation in Des Moines on how attendees could improve their health and well-being through diet and life choices.

Zach will be one of the authors participating in this year’s Iowa City Book Festival taking place from July 13-15, and is currently on a media tour to promote the book—which will include national television appearances, such as tonight’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
