Surviving Winter

Today in Iowa City, we’re enjoying blue skies and balmy temperatures up to 51F. Outside the alumni association offices, bright green spears of daffodils are appearing in the garden beds. Anyone would think we’d skipped winter altogether and headed straight into spring!

Of course, Iowa winters can be deceptive. We do have at least two more months in which plummeting temperatures, snow, and ice could descend, as seen in this 2008 photo of myself and Associate Editor Shelbi Thomas during an intensely, bitterly cold spell.

If that’s the case, don’t worry! A few weeks ago, Shelbi and I attended a lecture on campus about “How to Survive an Iowa Winter.” In the February 2012 issue of Iowa Alumni Magazine, we’ll share some tips we learned. In the meantime, stay warm!
