Hawkeye History: December 30, 1956

55 years ago, the Iowa football team prepared to take on Oregon State in the 1957 Rose Bowl.  Iowa head coach Forest Evashevski scheduled full-contact practice sessions, and declared, “We’re going to buckle down to serious business.”  Reporters described the scrimmage they attended as “mass mayhem,” and at one point right tackle Dick Klein was knocked unconscious.

Did you know?

- Iowa’s Tournament of Roses Parade float featured a fighting Herky centerpiece and Miss State University of Iowa Sandy Lohner waving to the crowds.

- Late-model cars could be purchased for monthly payments of $12.

- Milk was 68 cents a gallon.
