Suicide: Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention

According to Suicide Awareness Voices in Education, suicide is the nation’s second-leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 24. Unfortunately, that statistic means that many people have had to face firsthand the tragic realities of life after someone commits suicide.

John Westefeld, a professor in the University of Iowa’s counseling psychology program, will lead a Lifelong Learning session on hope to prevent and cope with suicide. Westefeld, who has experienced the personal loss of a loved one due to suicide, will discuss risk factors, resources, and recovery for those left behind.

“Suicide: Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention” is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19, at the John and Mary Pappajohn Education Center in Des Moines. This free event, which is open to the public, will begin with a 6 p.m. reception. Discussion will follow at 6:30 p.m.
