Brain Power

The UIAA would like to thank the Des Moines Public Library, Dr. Steven Anderson, and everyone who attended our latest Lifelong Learning event. On Wednesday, March 27, 97 UI alumni and friends of the university packed the Central Des Moines Public Library for the privilege to listen to Steven Anderson, 85MA, 87PhD, director of the neuropsychological rehabilitation program at UI Hospitals and Clinics, discuss recent advances in optimizing current and future brain health

Dr. Anderson addressed a number of factors that attribute to our overall brain health as well as the six domains of behavior that are crucially important to brain function. Those domains are:

  1. The brain benefits from cognitive challenges
  2. The brain benefits from regular physical exercise
  3. The brain benefits from good sleep
  4. The brain benefits from proper nutrition
  5. The brain benefits from management of stress responses and negative emotion
  6. The brain benefits from positive social interaction.

Overall, the evidence Dr. Anderson provided suggests that these fundamental aspects of behavior are important for optimizing brain function and quality life no matter one’s age or cognitive ability.
