Ready to Run

The Nearly Naked Mile, a one-mile fun run hosted by the S.T.A.T. Ambassadors, will be held on Saturday, March 9, at Gibson Square. In its fifth year, the philanthropic event encourages participants to donate clothing for a cause. Registration and check-in begin at 9 a.m., and the race will start at 10 a.m.

If I could describe this event in one word, it would be unpredictable.

This will be my fourth year working the event, and I’m sure there will be many surprises. One surprise will be the weather. I’ve experienced rain, snow, sleet, and sun, so who knows what this year will bring. Another surprise will be the creativity of the costumes that runners wear—or what they don’t wear. Participants have run in anything from superhero costumes to typical workout clothes to swimsuits. Any attire is welcomed, just as long as all swimsuit areas are covered!

Although many aspects of the event are uncertain, one thing is for sure: the run will be a success. The clothing donations received are going to help those in need.

This year, the donations will go to United Action for Youth (UAY). For more than four decades, UAY has provided services and assistance to youth and families in the Iowa City community. UAY offers youth development programs and prevention programs that focus on using young people’s talents and creativity.
