“Once a Hawkeye…” August Winner

August Once a Hawkeye Winner - Larry WalzCongratulations to Larry Walz, our “Once a Hawkeye…” drawing winner for August and recipient of a great selection of University of Iowa items.

He says: “Once a Hawkeye…means growing up in Iowa and having your dad instill in you how great it is to be a Hawkeye. My daughter nominated me for an award while attending Iowa and I received the UI ‘Dad of the Year’ award in front of 70,000-plus fans while standing on the 50-yard line in Kinnick Stadium! It doesn’t get any better than that!”

You can enter our monthly giveaways simply by telling us what “Once A Hawkeye…” means to you. Many alumni and friends have shared some amazing stories with us, and we encourage you to submit your own https://wordpress.iowalum.com/onceahawkeye/story.cfm.

My mom was a die hard Hawkeye fan, she loved each and every Hawkeye who ever lived! She raised all 6 of us to be Hawk fans too. For every holiday we knew exactly what to get her for if it was Hawkeye anything she loved it! She passed away from colon cancer in 2003, but us kids keep the Hawkeyes near and dear to our hearts and know that mom would be proud of the way we stay loyal to her beloved teams. We try to get together for all games that are televised and watch them as a family like we all used to when she was alive, even my brother who lives in Arkansas comes back as often as he can so we can be together in mom’s memory and enjoy the games. For Labor day we had a picnic and took the big screen out to the garage and watched the game all sitting in lawn chairs in the driveway hollering and screaming at the tv wearing our black and gold, people driving by stopped and stared it was great fun and even better they won! Our family LOVES the HAWKEYES and as the saying goes… Once a Hawkeye, ALWAYS a Hawkeye even in memory and spirit!

To me once a Hawkeye always a hawkeye means that no matter how good or bad they do in any given year and no matter where you may live you always cheer for the Hawks and remember the campus. You bleed black and gold and are in awe every time you walk into Kinnick and feel the tradition.

Once a Hawkeye. Always a Hawkeye. Always finding other Hawkeye fans no matter where you go. Always a nod, a “Go Hawks”, or a conversation. Always a swelling of pride on hearing about another Hawkeye achievement, be it academic, artistic, or athletic. And, it always reminds me of my Dad, an ISU grad and a Cyclone and the contest for bragging rights! Once a Hawkeye, Always a Hawkeye.
