Hawkeye History: May 17, 1977

For the first time since 1952, the tradition of having students walk across the stage as their name was read was reinstated at the spring commencement ceremony, held in the Field House. Previously, students had stood up in their seats with classmates from their college.

“I thought it should be changed because it’s important to recognize people for their accomplishments,” says UI president Sandy Boyd.

Did you know?

- The minimum wage was $2.30 ($8.75 in today’s dollars)

- The previous month, U.S. President Jimmy Carter gave a speech asking Americans to reduce their oil consumption, as the country was importing ever-increasing amounts of oil from potentially unfriendly areas in the Middle East.
