Don Gets His Due

Former Hawkeye Don Nelson was announced as a member of the 2012 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class today. He was voted the team MVP for three consecutive years (1960-62) at Iowa and went on to play and coach in the NBA, ending his career at the league’s winningest coach, with 1,335 victories. Nelson’s résumé also includes winning five NBA championships as a player and being named NBA Coach of the Year three times. “I was sitting on my back porch, smoking a cigar, when I got the call,” Nelson said. “It was a great moment for me. I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
