Share Your Story: Once a Hawkeye…

What does “Once A Hawkeye…” mean to you? Whether you’re a graduate or a friend of the university, the memories created here can last a lifetime. We recently received a wonderful submission from Lucille McCann, wife of alumnus Terry McCann Sr., who had a decorated wrestling career at Iowa and won an Olympic gold medal in 1960.

This story is about my husband, Terry McCann Sr., who was a loyal Hawkeye from the time he set foot on campus in 1957 until his passing in 2006. Terry was the first University of Iowa wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal (1960, Rome). As a student-athlete, he earned two NCAA championships and three Big Ten titles; in 1989, he was inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame.

Terry kept in touch with all his friends he had met at the UI. We were married on campus at St. Thomas More Church and celebrated 52 years ofmarriage before his death. Both of our sons also attended the UI, and our family will always be a part of the university.
