Hawkeye History: January 18, 1981

Plans for the grand opening of the Old Capitol Mall were announced. The three anchor stores were JC Penney, Osco Drug, and Younkers, and other businesses slated to open included a cheese shop, record shop, delicatessen, theater, and a sporting goods store. Today, the center is home to many UI offices and services, including the University Bookstore and a QuickCare medical clinic.

- One of the first automated teller machines in Iowa City was installed at the UI  Community Credit Union’s Iowa Avenue office.

- The winner of The Daily Iowan’s football picks contest received a pony keg of beer as a prize.
