Hawkeye History: January 03, 1923

The University of Iowa medical school received a gift of $2.2 million from the Rockefeller Foundation, which, at the time, was the largest gift ever made to a tax-supported institution in the United States. Adjusted for inflation, it would be a $30 million gift in today’s dollars. A part of the old general hospital – often recognized by the landmark Boyd Tower (added in 1976) pictured above – built with these funds still stands on the west side of the Iowa River.

Did you know?

- Iowa defeated Yale in a rifle-shooting match by a score of 496-493.
- Over 1,000 people spent New Year’s Day skating on the Iowa River.
- Student meals downtown cost around 35 cents.
