Hawkeye History: December 28, 1968

Iowa tailback Eddie Podolak took part in the East-West Shrine game, a post season all-star game televised on ABC. Podolak would go on to a nine-year career in the NFL and is now well-known to fans as a color commentator on Hawkeye football games.

- The astronaut crew of Apollo 8 returned from the moon, and Air Force Col. Frank Borman remarked that the moon is “made out of American cheese.”

- The United States Treasury Department announced that the country’s trade surplus would be $1 billion for the year, the worst in a decade.

- Vietnamese and American officials declared a temporary cease-fire to observe the upcoming New Year. Tensions were high following the Tet Offensive earlier in 1968.
