Hawkeye History: December 30, 1956

55 years ago, the Iowa football team prepared to take on Oregon State in the 1957 Rose Bowl.  Iowa head coach Forest Evashevski scheduled full-contact practice sessions, and declared, “We’re going to buckle down to serious business.”  Reporters described the scrimmage they attended as “mass mayhem,” and at one point right tackle Dick Klein was knocked unconscious.

Surviving Winter

Today in Iowa City, we’re enjoying blue skies and balmy temperatures up to 51F. Outside the alumni association offices, bright green spears of daffodils are appearing in the garden beds. Anyone would think we’d skipped winter altogether and headed straight into spring!

Hawkeyes Huddle Up Tonight

We invite all Insight Bowl travelers and Iowa fans to attend the Hawkeye Huddle tonight from 6-9 p.m. (Arizona time) at the Phoenix Convention Center. The event will feature appearances by Herky, the Iowa cheerleaders, the Hawkeye Marching Band, and Gary Dolphin–the Voice of the Hawkeyes.

Hawkeye History: December 28, 1968

Iowa tailback Eddie Podolak took part in the East-West Shrine game, a post season all-star game televised on ABC. Podolak would go on to a nine-year career in the NFL and is now well-known to fans as a color commentator on Hawkeye football games.

A Hawkeye Tree for the Holidays

Members of the Des Moines IOWA Club put on a sparkling display of Hawkeye pride at the 2011 Festival of Trees and Lights. The annual event helps raise funds for the Blank Children’s Hospital by auctioning some of the festive trees.
