Spreading the Hawkeye Cheer

What’s better than being a Hawkeye at Homecoming? Sharing your Hawkeye spirit with someone new to the UI scene.

This week, my kid sister and brother are visiting from Alabama. They never experienced the thrill of an Iowa game day until this past Saturday when I took them to their first college football matchup. We practiced Hawkeye cheers at the UIAA Members’ Tailgate, participated in the card stunts that transformed Kinnick Stadium into a red, white, and blue and black and gold paradise, and high-fived fellow Iowa fans over the victory against Northwestern. My brother has gone from calling the Hawkeyes the “hockeys” to becoming best buds with Herky the Hawk.

This is my tenth Homecoming in Iowa City, but sharing it with my elementary school-aged siblings has made it the best one yet. Last night, we roamed the hallways of the UI Athletics Hall of Fame to gather autographs from Iowa student-athletes. We plan to attend “Iowa Shout” tonight, and we’ll top off their UI experience with Friday’s Homecoming parade in downtown Iowa City.

As you make plans to visit the UI campus, consider bringing an Iowa outsider or two along. I hope you have the opportunity to see Iowa Homecoming Week from a fresh perspective as I have—and create some new Hawkeye fans!
