Something Wicked This Way Comes

’Tis the season when horror movies haunt cable TV, candy corn returns to supermarket shelves, and Halloween costume shops bring empty storefronts back from the dead. But beyond the costumes and candy, Halloween is the perfect time of year to examine the war between good and evil that’s waged not only in our justice system, but within our own hearts.

Soon, you’ll receive the October issue of Iowa Alumni Magazine, which features an article about a UI philosophy course on the nature of evil. Looking at real-world examples of wickedness, including serial killers, 9/11, and the Holocaust, the course explores what makes an action or a person evil and encourages students to reflect on the moral principles that guide their lives.

How would you define evil? If you read the article, be sure to e-mail me your thoughts.
