Welcoming New Hawkeyes

Next week, a new group of future University of Iowa alumni will arrive on campus. The start of the school year is always an exciting time for students, parents, and UI staff, but this year offers even more to look forward to than usual. That’s because all first-year students will participate in On Iowa!, a new program that immerses freshmen in all things Hawkeye.

Once first-year students move in, an amazing array of activities await them, including a coffeehouse crawl, Lake Macbride excursion, live band karaoke competition, and nearly 90 other events. Next Friday, the official program begins when students meet up in smaller groups and go to Kinnick Stadium for dinner, activities, and speeches. There, they will find out what awaits them in the next four (or more) years, learn the Iowa Challenge, and discover all of the ways they can be engaged at the University of Iowa. On Sunday, the students can attend fitness classes, explore downtown, participate in a non-denominational inspirational event in Hubbard Park, and enjoy convocation and the President’s Block Party.

Over the past nine months, I have had the opportunity to serve as On Iowa! co-committee chair with my colleague in UI Admissions, Anne Gannaway. We have had a great time working together to create the best range of pre-programs we could. The amount of hours the entire campus has put into this project is inspiring. Every office is involved from housing to assessment, from admissions to the alumni association.

We here at the alumni association feel that this is a very important time for us to engage with these first-year students. As we all know, time flies, and before these students know it, they will become alumni. We are welcoming them to the Hawkeye family and beginning a life-long relationship with these students now. After all, once a Hawkeye…
