State Fair

Have you ever posed for a picture with a butter cow, competed in a duck-calling contest, or eaten fried butter on a stick? If not, what are you waiting for? The state fair kicks off today in Des Moines and offers these and many more “only in Iowa” experiences.

If you head to the fair over the next ten days, be sure to stop by the University of Iowa exhibition booth. Faculty and staff volunteers will be on hand to showcase their work and greet UI alumni and their families. The full schedule of events includes science experiments, Japanese paper crane-making, and autograph sessions with former Hawkeye athletes.

A few of my colleagues at the UI Alumni Association have made it a tradition to go to the fair every year. Although I’ve lived in Iowa for most of my life, I’ve only been twice—once in elementary school and again in high school. I fondly remember drinking freshly-squeezed lemonade, enjoying big-name concerts, and even petting a snake (surprisingly not slimy)!

Now I want to know: What are your favorite memories of the Iowa State Fair?
