Destination Coralville

More than 10,000 bicyclists pedaling across Iowa will arrive tomorrow in Coralville, an overnight stop for RAGBRAI XXXIX. To celebrate RAGBRAI’s inaugural “College Spirit Day,” bikers will sport their school colors on their journey from Grinnell. Once in Coralville, riders can enjoy a college football tailgating theme that includes a mascot challenge and “College Row,” where staff from the University…

What’s on Your Bucket List? (Apart from the Hawkeye Football Team.)

I should have known better. When I posted a question—“What’s on your bucket list?”—on the UIAA Facebook page, I should have expected the answers to revolve around Hawkeye football!

“Watching the Hawkeyes at the Rose Bowl!” said one person. “See Iowa win a national championship,” chimed in another.

Such devotion to the Iowa football team is, of course, admirable. But, I was…

Rocky Mountain High: Revisited

I just returned from a short vacation to Estes Park, Colorado, and Rocky Mountain National Park, where I hadn’t visited in 30 years. The trip really brought back all the love and wonder I feel for that spectacular part of the country.

“Back in the day,” as my daughter puts it, I was one of those 1970s backpackers and hikers…

A Paranormal Adventure

Looking for thrills one Halloween night, my friends and I took a stroll from Currier Hall to Oakland Cemetery. Along the way, a black cat crossed our path—not a good sign for four college students about to come face-to-face with the Black Angel.

For those who haven’t heard the lore surrounding this statue, the Black Angel supposedly turns a shade darker…

Be Cool

Be cool

A good part of the United States is sweltering under a protracted heat wave with no signs of cooler weather in the long-range forecast.

Friends and colleagues in Iowa City have been sharing their stories of things to do while staying cool. Many report watching old movies, playing board games with their children, and reading a good book. Others have been…

Big Ten Alumni Relations Logo

Several UIAA staff members ventured to Purdue University this past June to attend the Big Ten Alumni Relations Institute. Although the Big Ten universities compete against each other in collegiate meets and matches, their alumni relations offices benefit from collaboration. Members from each institution used the opportunity to socialize, share ideas, and participate in best-practice discussions. The UIAA’s own Leslie…

Back to School?

Say it isn’t so! I stopped by Target the other day to pick up some essentials, and the school supply shelves are already stocked with notebooks, pens, lunch boxes, and backpacks. Before we know it, we’ll be browsing those aisles to get everything we need for another school year.

The fall semester is already on the minds of the first-year students…
