On the Fast Track

Congratulations to the Hawkeye men’s track and field team, who won the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships this past weekend for the first time in 44 years.

Under gloomy skies and a steady rain, Iowa entered the final day of competition in ninth place. But as the sun started to peek through the clouds, the Hawkeyes began their rapid ascent to the top of the Big Ten. It all came down to the final event, the men’s 4×400, in which the Hawkeyes edged out defending champion Minnesota by 1.42 seconds for the Big Ten team title.

The victory in Iowa City was a fitting closer to a season full of record-breaking performances. In the June digital issue of Iowa Alumni Magazine, we’ll introduce you to UI sophomore Jeff Thode, who recently became the first Hawkeye to run the mile in under four minutes. Then in August, you’ll learn more about the storybook ending to what longtime coach Larry Wieczorek calls the best year yet for Iowa track.
