Grace Under Pressure

Just this past week, the entire university took part in a tornado warning exercise. At the Levitt Center for University Advancement, which houses the alumni association, when the tornado sirens blare, we all have to traipse down to the basement—against a backdrop…

Some Free Things to Do in Iowa City

A few weeks ago, during spring break, I visited the Museum of Natural History in downtown Iowa City with my daughter and granddaughter. I had not been there for several years and decided a visit was due.

The museum has three main halls. Iowa Hall is described on the UI website as a 500-million-year adventure through Iowa’s geological, cultural, and ecological…

Hamburger U: Who Knew?

Herky vs. the Flu

Talk about irony. One of the UI students who fills the role of beloved mascot Herky the Hawk has been admitted to UI Hospitals and Clinics with a case of bird flu.

Although the student is in no danger and is expected to make a full and speedy recovery, UI experts say that the case demonstrates the need to be vigilant…
