Zipping Along in Costa Rica

Gary Hayes, of Winona, Minnesota, zips above the forest foliage during the Voyagers trip this past March to Costa Rica.

Last month, several Iowa Voyagers reveled in warm Costa Rican weather and enjoyed outdoor activities, including zip-lining through the rainforest.  In addition, the little band of Iowa Voyagers learned about Costa Rica’s unique natural heritage during visits to Poas Volcano National…

The Old Music Building Given New Life

I’ve been in Iowa City for nine years and interviewed Hawkeyes from a variety of areas within the university, yet there are still a few buildings on campus that I’ve never stepped foot in. The Old Music Building is one of them.

As a student, I heard stories of the OMB’s beginnings as an isolation ward for University Hospital tuberculosis patients….

The RiverRun Experience

I groaned as I rolled out of bed to check the weather, which told me the temperature outside was about 34 degrees. Although I wanted to crawl back into bed (because, really, what right-minded college student would be up at 6:30 on a Sunday morning to run 3.1 miles?), I instead pulled on my old high school running tights, chugged…

Just Criminal

At first glance, I would seem to have little in common with former Hawkeye and current NFL star Dallas Clark, 07BA, although I was quite the athlete in my youth (I played a mean game of field hockey!).  But, it turns out that we do have a connection. You see, I’m a fan of TV crime shows like CSI and…

For the Parents of UI Students

The responsibilities of a parent don’t necessarily end when the child leaves the nest. (Well, maybe for the Decorah eagles…will those parents keep tabs on their three little ones when they move out? I’m not up on my eagle-life trivia.) I’m sure when students start at the University of Iowa, there are many people that are still looking out for…

Last Lecture Lesson

Last night, UI business professor Kenneth Brown presented S.T.A.T.’s annual Last Lecture. Seniors were enlightened by Brown’s personal experiences and examples of how to achieve private victories. One of his personal goals was to become a father. Brown was accompanied by his wife, father, mother, and two daughters. Though Brown shared that he was at first nervous and afraid of…

Get Out Your Pipes and Kilts!

We first started meeting with the Scottish Highlanders reunion committee almost two years ago to plan their 75th Anniversary Celebration and Reunion, which will take place September 1-4, 2011. I remember thinking September 2011 sounded like an eternity away. But here we are, ready to send out the reunion brochure and follow-up e-mail announcing registration and events.

For those of…

In Memoriam

Last Wednesday, my first cousin Peggy died suddenly at the age of 58.

She was the proud and dedicated mother of four children, including three University of Iowa graduates. Her twin daughters received bachelor of science degrees in biology from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and went on to earn medical degrees—one here at Iowa. Her son followed the…

A Good Use For Your Smart Phone

I use what I call a “dumb phone,” so these QR code images might as well be Magic Eye pictures to me. However, for a growing number of people in the UI community, an iPhone or Android smart phone puts a smorgasbord of information at their fingertips.

Iowa has created an application called UI Mobile for these tech-savvy Hawkeyes. Through this…

Student Football Tickets Available Now

Last week, student football tickets went on sale for the 2011-2012 school year.  S.T.A.T. (Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow) members receive a $14 discount on their football tickets.  So far, more than 1,000 students have taken advantage.  I see it as a win-win for all students – a S.T.A.T. membership is only $20, and with a $14 discount on football…
