Show of Strength

Last week, nearly 950 wrestlers representing more than 230 Iowa high schools converged on Des Moines for the 2011 Iowa High School Wrestling Tournament. I drove over to Des Moines on Saturday to watch the grapplers in action, and I have to say, I was glad I made the trip. Besides being my first time at the state tournament, I also got to see Cade Jones, a sophomore from West Branch, compete in the semifinals. Cade’s mom, Kerry, is a UI Alumni Association colleague.

The final session was sold-out, so I returned home to Iowa City to watch the championship matches and medal award ceremonies from the comfort of my couch. Although Cade didn’t reach the championship match, I was excited to see him on the medal stand, celebrating his fourth-place finish in the 1A bracket. Not bad for a sophomore. Perhaps the most exciting thing was for Cade to have reached the two goals he set for himself pre-season—1) to make it to the state tournament and 2) to medal.

My wrestling weekend was capped last night, watching Coach Brands’ Hawks extend their unbeaten streak to 77 and seal their fourth-straight Big Ten regular-season title in their 19-12 win over the Minnesota Gophers.
