Us vs. Them

Last time I was in California, I discovered that my niece is carrying on a family sports tradition—love for the UCLA Bruins, hate for the evil USC Trojans. Right on!

However, it reminded me that Iowans are far less fractious when it comes to their beloved teams. While one may be a Cyclone or a Panther most of the time, there comes a time each year when everyone is a Hawkeye fan.

It might be due to a smaller population—the entire state of Iowa is less than one-third that of Los Angeles proper. Or, because they only have two big schools and we have three, so it’s easier for us to be pragmatic about who’s better. Perhaps it’s because our schools are all in different conferences. But I like to think it’s because Iowans are just all-around good sports who all really do believe “once a Hawkeye….”
