Ready for Chair Season

February—the month when many of us begin to realize winter really will come to an end. But February isn’t the beginning of the end of something for me. Instead it’s the beginning of another season most people have never heard of—a little something I like to call “chair season.”

What is “chair season,” you ask? Chair season is the time when departments on campus start looking forward to the end of the school year and wonder how they are going to recognize retiring faculty and staff, or congratulate those who have achieved a degree in a specialized field. And what better way to celebrate the time spent at the University of Iowa than with a chair emblazoned with the seal of the university?

Well, I am the person (actually, I prefer the term “conduit”) through whom all on-campus orders must pass. I have to say, it’s a great way to get to know people in departments I would never have met otherwise (I hope I never have to deal with pathology or otolaryngology on a personal level). Plus, the chairs are really beautiful.

Perhaps you have been trying to think of the perfect gift for an alum, something to commemorate their time at the UI? Well, the chairs are available to the general public. For more information, and more gift ideas, please check out our merchandise page at
