Thank You, UIHC

I have to admit, I usually avoid the hospital (UIHC) and surrounding area here in Iowa City. Being congested and nowhere to park are two of the main reasons. Many of us that live or work nearby see the Gothic Tower everyday looming over the city with its suggestion of past days. We also have another smaller hospital in the area that seems easier to access and maneuver around in. Not quite as daunting as UIHC.

You may be wondering—what’s my point? My point is that on a daily, monthly, or even yearly basis, I largely ignore UIHC. That is until someone in my extended family needed a tertiary care facility. Then you don’t ignore the fact that we have a wonderful hospital right at our fingertips that is recognized as one of the best hospitals in the United States. UIHC employs 775 staff physicians and dentists, 720 resident and fellow physicians and dentists, 1,671 nurses, and nearly 5,000 other professional and support staff who provide specialized care.

When you have a family member who will undergo specialized testing, possible surgery, and a possible lengthy stay in the hospital—and especially when that family member is six years old—you realize how lucky we are to have UIHC. No one will need to travel to the Mayo Clinic five hours away. Family will be here to surround and support our loved one and his family. Part of UIHC’s vision statement says, “World Class People. World Class Medicine. For Iowa and the World.” I promise not to ignore you anymore and want to express my thanks for being here for us.
