Olympic Greatness Headed for Iowa City?

Last week, we told you about Dan Gable’s appearance on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The episode—in which the Olympic champion surprised a Kentucky family with a love for wrestling, but no connection to Iowa—demonstrates the far-reaching impact of the Hawkeye wrestling program.

On Wednesday, U.S. Olympic Committee, USA Wrestling, and USA Weightlifting officials may bolster that legacy by making Iowa City the site of the April 2012 USA Olympic Wrestling and Weightlifting Trials. The college town is one of three communities (along with Columbus, Ohio, and Council Bluffs) that’s being considered. With Iowa’s record fan attendance, history of gold medalists, and new crop of homegrown Olympic hopefuls, it wouldn’t surprise me if an American wrestler’s road to the Olympics ran straight through Iowa City.
