Big Ten Makeover

Although Hawk fans didn’t get to see an Iowa-Nebraska matchup in the Insight Bowl, they did receive a recent glimpse into what next year’s Big Ten will look like. Yesterday, the conference released its new logos, division names, and trophy titles.

Iowa will play in the Legends division with Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Northwestern, while Illinois, Indiana, Ohio…

Adventure in South Africa

Last month, 20 Iowa Voyagers experienced the thrill of exploring South Africa, a land of spectacular cultural, biological, and geological diversity. Our group started their journey with several days in Cape Town, the “Mother City of South Africa,” where they learned about the country’s rich history and culture, visited Robben Island, sampled wine at Siedelberg Wine Estate in…

Welcome to Study Hall

Student Study Hall

Many, many years have elapsed since I last worried about final exams, but this weekend I’ll get to relive the experience—vicariously, anyway.

Along with other volunteers from the UIAA staff and the S.T.A.T. student group, I’ll be working at the Levitt Center this weekend for the popular study hall session offered to our student members. I won’t actually be poring over…

A Salute to the Alumni Records Department

Dina McFarland

I’ve written before, remembering Margaret Lillard, who was the alumni records manager for 25 years and who passed a few years ago. One of Margaret’s best moves was hiring Dina McFarland to work in records. Dina’s been here almost 25 years herself.

During and after Margaret’s battle with cancer, Dina held the Alumni Records Department together. Dina did not…

Alumni Career-Focused Webinar, December 14

Surely I’m not the only person out there that’s a little paranoid about my “social résumé.” You know, the feeling of not wanting a picture, Facebook comment, or quote somewhere online to come back and haunt you? However, working with college students, I know not everyone shares this same paranoia. More than once, I’ve shaken my head as I’ve seen…

No More Bus Stop Blues

Countless times, I’ve bundled up in layers and waddled out to the bus stop in subzero temperatures. As I turn into an icicle, I wonder if the bus will ever come, so I can defrost and regain feeling in my hands.

Thankfully, the mystery of the missing bus ends this winter. The Iowa City, Coralville, and UI transit systems have banded…

Farewell, Floyd

Heaps of blame flew around following Iowa’s recent 27-24 loss to the Golden Gophers, which culminated in the Floyd of Rosedale trophy returning to Minnesota for the first time since 2006. Critics pointed accusatory fingers at Iowa’s quarterback, the defensive team, and the coach.

Little do they know who’s really responsible for this crushing loss in the Iowa/Minnesota annual rivalry game:…

Engineering Students’ Vegetable Car Racing: Does Ranch Dressing Come With That?

Yesterday, I was over at the Seamans Center visiting with Fred Streicher and Wendy Brentner (they work with College of Engineering alumni and outreach projects) to discuss events for next year. As our conversation tends to float between random topics (bowl game speculation not withstanding), we got a little off course when they started telling me about the ‘’Vegetable Car…
