One week from Saturday marks the start of the much-anticipated 2010 Hawkeye football season. At my house, we’re experiencing a different kind of countdown. One week from Saturday could be the day our third child makes her way into the world. My actual due date is September 10 – but I have a feeling there’s no way I’m going to make it until then. I’m the office pot who looks like she’s going to boil over any second; we even have a baby pool going to see when this kid will arrive.

Although September 4 (Iowa vs. Eastern Illinois) sounds like a great day to have a baby, I’d prefer to avoid football Saturday. I can’t imagine trying to get to UI Hospitals & Clinics on game day. No, Sunday sounds much better.

I’d also prefer to hang around the Levitt Center these next few days, just to wrap up my final stories for our October issue of Iowa Alumni Magazine (including a special feature on – what else? – Iowa tailgating) and other UIAA-related projects. I aim to serve.

So, I’m shooting this baby a memo now:

Dear Baby Girl,

I’ve given this a lot of thought and feel it’s in our best interest to go for Labor Day (September 6). I mean, how appropriate is that? Now is as good a time as any to start listening to your mother.

Are you with me?

Can’t wait to meet you,
